Lunch With Cleopatra - Affairs of the Arts #11
● Wednesday, March 14, 2012; 11:30am-1:00pm
● Tickets are $46 per person
● Quail West Clubhouse, Naples
● When did you first meet Cleopatra? Was it through
William Shakespeare’s Anthony and Cleopatra that the exciting temptress first came to life as she
beguiled Mark Anthony? Possibly, it was one of the great master paintings entitled “The Death of
Cleopatra,” that pulled at heartstrings as you pondered the role and reason for the asp in the final
moments of her young life. Or was it Elizabeth Taylor who first introduced the sexy, beguiling Egyptian
Queen? Yet, did we meet the real Cleopatra? Born in 69BC, Cleopatra becomes Queen of Egypt at 18, ruling
with her 10 year old brother, Ptolemy XIII. By the time she’s 21, and her brother 13, they’re feuding
and vying for power. Who enters this historic scene of a family power struggle in 48BC? None other than
the dynamic Roman General, Julius Caesar, looking to add Egypt to his conquests for Rome. And with whom
should he align his greatness—the young king or his sister? Is there any way the clever Cleopatra could
plead her own case to Caesar, himself? Barbara Rinella brings to life this formidable Queen with the keen
intellect, shrewd political instincts, appreciation for luxury and power, and her great loves and romantic
involvements. Was Cleopatra truly the principal player of the age? Oh, what a history lesson Ancient Egypt
wants to share as you meet, finally, the “real” Cleopatra!
